Vintage Cabouchon Japanese Zodiac inspired gold plated tiger brooch with black enamel

This tiger brooch with black enamel is part of the special Japanese Zodiac inspired collection by Cabouchon.

In AD604 Japan adopted the Chinese lunar calendar which had a twelve branch cycle of years named after animals. These zodiac animals not only represented time and directions of the compass, they were also integral part of fortune telling and divination, producing superstitions in Japan that have not yet entirely disappeared.

The story goes that Buddha summoned all of the world's animals to appear before him on New Year's Day but only twelve responded - the rat, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and a boar.

As a reward, each animal was honoured by having a year designated with its name.

The years of the tiger include 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, and 2022 and 2024.

According to the Japanese legend, if you are born in the year of the Tiger, you are likely to be of superior intelligence, dignity and have great courage. Temperamentally you are sensitive and sympathetic. The year of the Tiger is the most fortunate year in which to be born.
